SUMMARY:Police, Politics, Power and Race - Chicago In Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Join the UIC Social Justice Initiative for an online discussion on how the current movement for Black Lives has led to the defunding of police in certain cities, calls for massive investments and new economic models for community empowerment. These demands and changes will continue to impact the city, nation and world.   Guest speakers will share knowledge and analyses of the racial and political implications for Chicago. The event will conclude with a performance by singer-songwriter, Jamila Woods.  Guest Speakers Include:   Renee Hatcher is a human rights and community development lawyer. She is an Assistant Professor of Law and the Director of the Community Enterprise & Solidarity Economy Clinic at UIC John Marshall Law School-Chicago.  Trina Reynolds-Tyler is an organizer, restorative justice facilitator, data analyst with the Invisible Institute, and also works as a data science researcher with TM Productions.  Kristiana Colón is an organizer and the co-director of the #LetUsBreathe Collective, an alliance of artists and activists organizing through a creative lens to imagine a world without prisons and police.   Jamila Woods is a Chicago-based American singer, songwriter and poet. Woods is also the Associate Artistic Director of Young Chicago Authors (YCA), an organization in the Chicago dedicated to uplifting youth voices through arts education and mentorship.  | Event post: https://sji.uic.edu/events?page_id=436
