Join the Social Justice Initiative at University of Illinois Chicago on September 26 for the opening reception of its latest exhibition in the Chicago Justice Gallery, We’re Not All Here / No Estamos Todes, by Canadian-Chilean artist Soledad Muñoz, curated by Lola Ayisha Ogbara.

We’re Not All Here / No Estamos Todes is a transnational archive of absence in the form of woven textiles, sound installation, a video documentary, and an elaborate set of maps that trace interconnected histories of disappearance, loss, and memory as resistance from Chile to Palestine to the state of Illinois. Activists, journalists, artists, healthcare workers, women, immigrants, and members of the LGBTQ community have faced state violence and exclusion from the protection of the law because of who they are, what they believe, and the movements and communities to which they belong. Creative and relentless movements have insisted that those who have been disappeared are not forgotten, and those who caused them harm are exposed and held accountable.

While each instance of disappearance occurs in its unique context, Muñoz’s work gestures toward a set of common tactics and logic underpinning acts of state violence and exclusion from the protection of the law. Viewed another way, this body of work also concerns itself with how different communities mobilize to mend, remember, and conceptualize justice in the aftermath of immense loss.

Soledad Fátima Muñoz is a Canadian-Chilean artist and researcher whose practice centers on the political and historical dimensions of textiles. Raised in Rancagua, Chile, she creates large-scale weavings—often made with copper wire—that explore memory, resistance, and material storytelling. Muñoz holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from Emily Carr University. She has received several awards, including the City of Vancouver Emerging Artist Award, the New Artists Society Merit Scholarship, and the Textile Society of America’s Student Award.

No Estamos Todes / We’re Not All Here es un archivo transnacional de ausencia en forma de textiles tejidos, una instalación sonora, un documental y un elaborado conjunto de mapas que trazan historias interconectadas de desaparición, pérdida, y memoria como resistencia desde Chile hasta Palestina y el estado de Illinois. Activistas, periodistas, artistas, trabajadores de salud, mujeres, inmigrantes y miembros de la comunidad LGBTQ+ han enfrentado la violencia estatal y a la exclusión de la protección de la ley debido a su identidad, sus creencias y los movimientos y comunidades a los que pertenecen. Movimientos creativos e incansables han insistido en que quienes han desaparecido no sean olvidados, y que quienes les causaron daño sean expuestos y responsabilizados.

Mientras que cada instancia de desaparición ocurre en su contexto particular, la obra de Muñoz apunta a un conjunto de tácticas y lógicas comunes que sustentan los actos de violencia estatal y la exclusión de la protección de la ley. Desde otra perspectiva, esta obra también se centra en cómo las diferentes comunidades se movilizan para reparar, recordar y conceptualizar la justicia tras una pérdida inmensa.

Soledad Fátima Muñoz es una artista e investigadora canadiense-chilena cuya práctica se centra en las dimensiones políticas e históricas de los textiles. Criada en Rancagua, Chile, crea tejidos a gran escala, a menudo hechos con alambre de cobre, que exploran la memoria, la resistencia y la narración material. Muñoz tiene una maestría en Bellas Artes de la Escuela del Instituto de Arte de Chicago y una licenciatura en Bellas Artes de la Universidad Emily Carr. Ha recibido varios premios, entre ellos el Premio al Artista Emergente de la Ciudad de Vancouver, la Beca al Mérito de la Sociedad de Nuevos Artistas y el Premio Estudiantil de la Sociedad Textil de América.
