Community Education Partnership With Prison Neighborhood Arts Project

During the year of 2015-2016, the Social Justice Initiative is participating in a community education project with the Prison Neighborhood Arts Project. In the Spring and Summer of 2016, we will host an exhibition based on a course on Freedom Dreams taught at Stateville Prison. Alice Kim, a writer and community educator taught the course to 15 inmates at Stateville. Their final project was to write an essay defining their “Freedom Dreams”. Several community artists have been commissioned to interpret the inmates’ writing in visual art forms. The artwork will be displayed along with the inmate’s essays in an exhibition to be held at PUJA in the spring of 2016.
